HOW TO USE THE CALCULATOR — STEP BY STEP
Step 1 — Set Your Preferred Units and Sizing Category Start by deciding whether you want to work in Imperial (pounds, feet, inches) or Metric (kilograms, centimeters).
Then select your sizing category. Adult Male and Unisex sizing runs on the A-scale. Adult Female sizing typically uses an F-scale or W-scale depending on the brand.
Step 2 — Enter Your Height and Weight Plug in your actual current measurements not an estimate and not what you were six months ago.

Step 3 — Choose Your Gi's Fabric Weave and Pre-Shrunk Status This is the step that separates this tool from a basic chart.
Select the weave type of the gi you are considering. Pearl weave is the most widely used and shrinks at a moderate, predictable rate. Gold weave runs heavier and is known for more dramatic shrinkage.
Double weave is the densest option and also contracts significantly with heat. Ripstop and hemp blends sit at the other end of the spectrum losing very little size over time.
You will also need to indicate whether the manufacturer pre-shrunk the gi, since that single factor has a major impact on how much additional shrinkage remains.
Step 4 — Pick Your Wash and Dry Routine Be accurate here this input directly shapes the final result. Cold water washing paired with hang drying produces minimal shrinkage.
Warm water with a low-heat tumble dry lands in moderate territory. Hot water and a high-heat dryer cycle will push a raw cotton gi to its maximum shrinkage potential. Once all four inputs are set, hit calculate and review your full sizing and shrinkage profile.
WHY A STANDARD SIZE CHART IS NOT ENOUGH
Cotton does not behave like a static material. Every gi comes out of the factory cut deliberately oversized, because the manufacturer knows the fabric will tighten once it hits water and heat. A sizing chart reflects those factory dimensions not the dimensions of the gi after six months of weekly washes.
If you sit near the upper boundary of a size bracket and you're buying a raw cotton gi with no pre-shrinking, a hot wash cycle can effectively drop that gi a full size. Buying blind using a standard chart means you might wash a perfectly priced A2 and end up with something closer to an A1.

HOW A PROPERLY FITTING GI SHOULD FEEL
When you extend both arms straight in front of you, the sleeve cuffs should reach your wrist bones. Anything shorter risks failing a competition measurement. Anything longer gives opponents a significant mechanical advantage when gripping.
The pant legs should fall just above the ankle bone with enough room to squat deeply without restriction at the hips or knees.
Across the chest, the lapels should overlap comfortably and the jacket should allow your shoulders to move freely in every direction without bunching or pulling.
Fit is a balance not too tight, not too loose, and not something that changes dramatically after the first wash.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND GI SHRINKAGE
During manufacturing, cotton fibers are pulled under tension to create the weave. That tension is stored in the fabric.
The moment the material contacts hot water and agitation those fibers begin releasing that stored tension and contracting toward their natural resting length. Heat accelerates the process significantly.
Pre-shrunk gis have already been through one wash and dry cycle at the factory which removes the most dramatic portion of that initial contraction.
They will still tighten slightly over their lifespan as the seams and lapel core settle in, but the change is far less extreme. An untreated, raw cotton gi, on the other hand, can drop a full size or more from a single aggressive wash.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Are gi sizes consistent across different brands?
The A0-through-A5 framework is an industry wide standard but individual brands apply their own measurements within those brackets.
This calculator uses widely accepted average dimensions for each size which align closely with the majority of mainstream manufacturers. The height weight body type combination it evaluates gives you a reliable starting point regardless of which brand you are shopping.
Is it a good strategy to buy larger and shrink it down intentionally?
Sometimes, but only under the right circumstances. If you land solidly in the middle of a size bracket, buying a size up and aggressively shrinking it usually leaves you with something that still fits too loosely.
The tactic makes sense when you sit at the very top of a bracket and your wash routine is expected to cause significant shrinkage and this calculator will tell you directly when that is the case rather than leaving you to guess.
What should I do if my measurements split between two sizes?
The calculator handles this by recommending size variants where they apply. If your height pushes past the typical range for your weight bracket, it will suggest a Long size like an A2L.
If your weight exceeds the typical range for your height it will point toward a Husky or Short variant. When a brand does not carry those specialized cuts, the practical rule is to size up to protect your largest measurement and then use controlled washing to manage excess length or width from there.
