How to Fix a Reptile Enclosure's Cool Side Too Hot Fast

When a reptile enclosure's cool side is too hot, the tank is almost always running warm overall not just at the basking end. Fix it by lowering bulb wattage or raising the fixture, and opening up more ventilation.

How to Fix a Reptile Enclosure Cool Side That's Too Hot: Step by Step

  1. Confirm the reading first: Swap the dial gauge for a digital probe at animal height on the cool side and give it an hour before trusting the reading.
  2. Check enclosure length against the heat source: A tank too short for its bulb wattage can't build enough distance for a real temperature drop, regardless of how you angle the light.
  3. Lower the wattage or raise the fixture: Drop to the next wattage down or raise the bulb 2 to 4 inches, then recheck the cool side an hour later.
  4. Add ventilation: A sealed or solid top enclosure traps heat that a mesh top or side vents would let escape.
  5. Address the room not just the tank: If the room runs above 78°F the cool side won't drop far enough below the basking spot no matter what changes inside the enclosure.
  6. Re-test and adjust: Log the cool side reading daily for three days after each change before deciding it worked.
