How to Calculate Pond Volume (Formulas Used)

Rectangular Ponds

The go-to shape for raised beds and formal garden ponds.

Formula: Length × Width × Average Depth = Cubic Feet. Multiply cubic feet by 7.48 to get US Gallons.

Circular Ponds

Used most often with pre-formed shells or barrel-style builds.

Kidney and Free-Form Ponds

Standard calculators fall apart here. A kidney pond is essentially two overlapping circular areas, so a straight length times width approach overstates the volume significantly.

This tool takes the widest point and the narrowest point, averages them, then applies a curve correction factor of 0.85. The result is a close real-world estimate rather than a theoretical one.

Pond Liner Sizing Guide: Don't Buy Short!

A liner doesn't just cover the bottom. It has to run down every wall, span the floor, climb back up the other side and extend far enough onto the surrounding ground to get pinned under edging stones or coping.

The correct sizing formulas are:

Liner Length = Maximum Pond Length + (2 × Maximum Depth) + (2 × Overlap Allowance)

Liner Width = Maximum Pond Width + (2 × Maximum Depth) + (2 × Overlap Allowance)

Heavy planting does a lot of the biological filtering work, and most aquatic plants prefer still or slow-moving water.

Target turnover: Once every two hours is adequate. Slower flow keeps water lily pads stable, encourages blooming and reduces your electricity bill.

Fish Stocking: How Many Koi Can I Keep?

Overstocking is the most common reason new ponds crash. Young koi look small in the store. Two years later, they're 24 inches long and your filtration is overwhelmed.

Koi: Plan on 250 gallons per adult fish. That sounds like a lot until you've watched a 28-inch koi outgrow a pond that was "supposed to be big enough." Crowded koi are stressed koi and stressed fish get sick.

Goldfish and Shubunkin: These top out at roughly 8 to 12 inches so the math is more forgiving one fish per 30 to 50 gallons is a reasonable working number.

Essential Pond Maintenance: Salt and Chemicals

Pond salt is used therapeutically it supports gill function, eases osmotic stress, and is a standard tool during spring restarts or when introducing new fish to an established pond.

The key detail most people miss: salt doesn't evaporate. Whatever you add stays in the water until you do a partial water change. That makes accurate dosing essential.

Standard therapeutic dose: 0.1% salinity, which works out to approximately 8.3 lbs of non-iodized salt per 1,000 gallons.

How deep should my koi pond be?

Three feet is the practical minimum for a dedicated koi pond. Does gravel and rockwork change the usable water volume?

It does. A heavily landscaped pond with a thick gravel bed and large boulders can have 10 to 15 percent of its capacity displaced by solid material.

Can I use a swimming pool calculator for my pond?

Not reliably. Pool calculators are built around vertical walls and flat bottoms both rare in a natural pond. Ponds typically have sloped sides to prevent soil collapse and often include planting ledges at various depths.
